Silicon Labs has announced the acquisition of well-known wireless mesh networking module provider Telegesis. These modules are based on the famous ZigBee technology.
Telegesis, based near London, has established itself as one of the leading ZigBee experts in the smart energy market. It provides ZigBee modules to a number of smart metering manufacturers all over the world. Silicon Labs focuses on offering a fleet of smart solutions ranging from plug-and-play modules to system-on-chip (SoC) devices, and this acquisition will surely enhance their overall capabilities in the long-term.
Telegesis modules come with integrated antenna and offer a pre-certified RF design that can reduce the overall cost, marketing time and compliance efforts by a huge margin. Customers who opt for these solutions can migrate to cost-efficient SoC-based designs from modules in the future.
If taken into consideration the entire market structure, one can clearly see that out of all the ZigBee PRO integrated circuits that are shipped today, 20% are used in modules. ZigBee module shipment is expected to grow at a whopping rate of 24.6% between 2014 and 2019.
The module products of Telegesis are exclusively equipped with ZigBee technology, and make a significant quality difference when deployed in USB adapters, smart meters and smart energy gateway applications.
