According to a report published by analyst firm Berg Insight and satnews.com, 0.5 million devices powered with satellite or cellular connectivity were used in various oil and gas applications across the globe. The report has been prepared based on the data available till December 2014. Experts claim that this number is elevating at a CAGR of 20.1% and will easily touch a whopping 1.25 million units by 2019.
If this figure is divided between cellular and satellite units, one can find that total cellular-based M2M devices will account for 0.99 million and satellite based M2M devices will account for 0.27 million. Due to inaccessible and remote facilities, the usage of wireless communication in oil and gas industry is increasing at a good rate. Experts believe M2M data can easily be communicated through these devices.
When it comes to top two M2M applications in downstream and midstream segments, tank monitoring and pipeline monitoring top the chart while on-shore well field equipment tops the chart in upstream segment.
Some of the major companies in M2M field include names like Sierra Wireless, Orbcomm, Digi International and Numerex. Other companies that look after specialized wireless M2M solutions for monitoring, remote control and automation in Oil & Gas industry are Elecsys, CriticalControl, ZTR Control Systems, Willowglen Systems, eLynx Technologies, Oleumtech, DataOnline, AMCi Wireless and American Innovation.
M2M communication is expanding at a great pace; hence, many more companies are likely to enter in this field over the next few years.
